🌿 Staghorn Fern (Platycerium bifurcatum)

🌿 Staghorn Fern

The Staghorn Fern is a living sculpture 🌿 admired for its antler-shaped fronds and artistic, tropical form. Native to rainforests of Australia and Southeast Asia, this epiphytic fern naturally grows on tree trunks, absorbing moisture and nutrients from the air. In kokedama form, it becomes a stunning statement piece that combines natural art and effortless greenery.

☀️ Light

  • Thrives in bright, indirect light or filtered sunlight.
  • Avoid harsh afternoon rays that can scorch fronds.
  • Prefers dappled light similar to what it receives in forest canopies.
  • Great for hanging near a bright window or shaded patio.

💧 Watering in Kokedama Form

  • Water when the moss feels light and dry on the surface 💧 about every 5–7 days in warm months, and every 10 days in cooler ones.
  • Soak the moss ball for 5–10 minutes, then allow it to drain thoroughly.
  • Mist fronds several times a week, especially in drier air.
  • Do not overwater 💧 fronds that darken or develop black spots may indicate excessive moisture.
💡 Tip: Because Staghorns absorb through both roots and leaves, consistent humidity and misting are just as important as watering.

🌿 Feeding

  • Feed every 4–6 weeks during spring and summer using a diluted balanced fertilizer (¼ strength).
  • Apply directly to the moss or mix into the soaking water 🌿 not onto fronds.
  • Pause feeding during fall and winter.

🌡 Temperature & Humidity

Ideal range: 65–85°F (18–29°C).

  • Loves high humidity (60–80%) and good airflow.
  • Avoid cold drafts or overly dry indoor air.
  • Perfect for bright bathrooms, kitchens, or near humidifiers.

✂️ Maintenance & Growth

  • Avoid cutting the round, shield-like “base fronds” ✂️ they protect and anchor the plant.
  • Trim away only brown or brittle upright fronds (the “antlers”) if necessary.
  • Wipe fronds gently with a soft brush or cloth to remove dust.
  • Rotate every few weeks to encourage even growth.
  • Can stay in kokedama form for 12–16 months before needing a refresh.

🌱 When to Refresh or Repot

Rewrap or repot when:

  • Roots begin escaping the moss ball or growth slows.
  • Moss becomes compacted or won’t rehydrate evenly.
  • Fronds appear pale or limp despite proper care.
When replanting, use a loose, airy mix with bark chips, peat, and sphagnum moss for best results.

💫 Fun Fact

The Staghorn Fern gets its name from its dramatic fronds that resemble deer antlers. It’s a true collector’s plant and one of the few ferns that can be mounted or hung as living wall art 💫  a natural conversation piece in any home.
