🌿 PARLOR PALM (Chamaedorea elegans)

🌿 PARLOR PALM

The Parlor Palm is a timeless indoor favorite 🌿 graceful, feathery, and air-purifying. Native to the rainforests of Central America, this slow-growing palm thrives in moderate light and humidity, making it perfect for homes and offices alike. In kokedama form, it transforms into an elegant living sculpture with soft, arching fronds that radiate calm and tropical charm.

☀️ Light

  • Prefers medium to bright, indirect light.
  • Tolerates low light better than most tropicals but grows more slowly.
  • Avoid direct sun, which can scorch delicate fronds.
  • Ideal near north or east windows, or several feet back from bright southern light.

💧 Watering in Kokedama Form

  • Keep the moss ball evenly moist but never soggy.
  • Water when the moss feels slightly lighter or the top begins to dry 💧 usually every 7–10 days.
  • Use 1 cup of water, letting it soak in slowly and evenly.
  • Mist lightly several times a week to maintain humidity around the fronds.
💡 Tip: Crispy leaf tips usually mean dry air, not under-watering. Increase misting or use a humidity tray nearby.

🌿 Feeding

  • Feed once a month during spring and summer with a ¼-strength balanced houseplant fertilizer.
  • Skip feeding during winter when growth slows.
  • Parlor Palms are light feeders 🌿 too much fertilizer can burn their roots.

🌡 Temperature & Humidity

  • Ideal temperature range: 65–80°F (18–27°C).
  • Prefers moderate humidity (50–70%), though it adapts to household air.
  • Avoid cold drafts, heat vents, or sudden temperature changes.
  • Excellent choice for low-maintenance, low-light areas like hallways or bedrooms.

✂️ Maintenance & Growth

  • Gently dust or wipe fronds every few weeks to keep them breathing easily.
  • Trim yellow or brown fronds at the base to encourage fresh growth.
  • Rotate every few weeks to keep shape balanced and prevent leaning.
  • Can stay in kokedama form for 10–14 months before needing refresh or rewrap.

🌱 When to Refresh or Repot

Rewrap or repot when:

  • Moss dries out too quickly or feels compacted.
  • New fronds grow smaller or slower than usual.
  • Roots begin pushing through the moss ball.
If replanting conventionally, use a well-draining soil mix with peat, coco coir, and perlite.

💫 Fun Fact

The Parlor Palm earned its name in the Victorian era, when it became the go-to plant for drawing rooms and parlors due to its graceful look and tolerance for low light. It’s also one of NASA’s top air-purifying plants, known for removing toxins like formaldehyde.
